The First High Priest

Aaron

Old Testament

Aaron, the elder brother of Moses and Miriam, stands as the first high priest of Israel — the man through whom an entire priestly lineage was established that would serve God's people for over a thousand years. When Moses protested that he was "slow of speech," God appointed Aaron as his spokesman: "He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him" (Ex 4:16). From the plagues of Egypt to the foot of Mount Sinai, Aaron stood at Moses' side.

Aaron's story is not one of unblemished holiness. When Moses delayed on the mountain, Aaron yielded to the people's demand and fashioned the golden calf — one of the most catastrophic episodes of idolatry in the Old Testament. Yet God did not reject Aaron. Instead, God consecrated him as high priest in an elaborate ceremony described in Exodus 29, clothing him in garments of glory and beauty, anointing him with sacred oil, and setting him apart to mediate between God and His people. The priesthood of Aaron became the foundation of all Israelite worship.

In Catholic theology, Aaron's high priesthood is understood as a type — a foreshadowing — of the eternal high priesthood of Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews develops this extensively: Christ is the high priest "according to the order of Melchizedek" who surpasses Aaron because He offers not the blood of bulls and goats but His own blood, entering not an earthly sanctuary but heaven itself. Aaron's breastplate, which bore the names of the twelve tribes over his heart, prefigures Christ who carries all of humanity in His heart before the Father. The Aaronic priesthood pointed beyond itself to the one sacrifice that would be sufficient for all time.
